In a move raising alarm among civil rights advocates and community organizers, Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) is preparing to deploy its elite Special Response Teams (SRTs) to five major cities led by Democratic officials, according to two sources with direct knowledge of the operation.

The cities include:

• Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

The SRTs, which operate like paramilitary units within ICE, are equipped with military-grade vehicles like BearCats, tactical gear, and long-range firearms. These teams are typically dispatched for what ICE classifies as “high-risk” operations, though critics argue their presence often escalates tensions and creates unnecessary fear within communities.

These units were previously used in the high-profile federal raid on music mogul Sean “Diddy” Combs’ properties, and more recently, in controversial operations in Los Angeles that preceded a wave of anti-enforcement protests across Southern California.

Though the precise nature and timing of potential raids remain unclear, ICE sources say all SRTs in the targeted cities have been instructed to “remain on standby and be deployment-ready.”

Civil liberties groups and immigration advocates are calling for transparency and restraint.
